A researcher at Saskatchewan Polytechnic’s Prince Albert campus claimed the top honours at their Applied Research Student Showcase.

John Kenneth Santos, who recently graduated with a certificate in geographic information science for resource management, presented his three-dimensional modelling project in the showcase. Despite stiff competition from more than 30 other applied research projects, Santos was awarded first place in the showcase along with the industry choice award and $1,000 in prize money.

“I was lost for words when my name was called twice,” Santos said. “I didn’t expect anything.”

Santos’ project was titled “three-dimensional visualization modelling of the subsurface geology of Al Khadar, Saudia Arabia using geophysical well log data in ArcGIS.” In simple terms, Santos said the project uses geographic imaging software to examine underground geology using detailed 3D models.
