Dragons lose bite late in home opener

May 22, 2018 | 8:27 PM

The Saskatchewan Rivers Dragons high school rugby club were about five minutes from picking up a victory in their home opener.

Instead of what could have been a 7-0 Dragons’ victory, they instead ended with a 17-7 defeat.

“I think we got too tired at the end of the game. We didn’t have enough bodies today, we only had a couple subs,” Dragons head coach Justin Derkach said. We played these guys a couple weeks ago, and definitely had improvements here today. The last five minutes was the difference between a win and a loss.

“Our first half, we played great defence. I think it was just the heat and the numbers that really did us in today.”

After a scoreless first half which saw the Dragons make a number of goal line stands, Dragons number-eight Jonty Kruger punched one through from 10 yards out, which was converted by Byren Farrell for the 7-0 advantage.

But in the last five minutes of the match, Luke Wilson, Andre Gerieke and Cam Marchand all scored for the Goats late in the game, slicing through the seemingly exhausted Dragons defence.

The Dragons will play the Lashburn Lucky’s on Saturday, 5 p.m. at Max Clunie Field, a makeup game for the previously cancelled matchup between the two clubs.
