Dog and drone detect Debden theft suspects

May 23, 2018 | 8:00 AM

A short property theft spree in the Debden and Canwood areas was brought to an end with a combination of hi-tech equipment and canine policing.

RCMP in Big River and Spiritwood received a call just before noon on Monday reporting two suspicious men on a farmyard about five miles west of Debden. They said the young suspects were confronted by property owners and ran off into a nearby wooded area. RCMP gave chase with assistance from Meadow Lake Police Dog Services. Also added to the hunt was a drone from a local Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment Officer.

The suspects, 18-year-old Kevin Starblanket and 19-year-old Skylar Lachance, were found inside a residence on the Big River First Nation less than three hours after police were first called. They now face various charges related to the possession of stolen property in three incidents from the Village of Debden and R.M. of Canwood during the previous 24 hours.

Both men are scheduled to appear in Prince Albert Provincial Court Wednesday. They are presumed innocent at this stage.
