Klughart beats Coben in playoff to win May Day Masters

May 21, 2018 | 4:43 PM

Danny Klughart defended his May Day Masters title, winning his second such title at the Cooke Municipal Golf Course. But Klughart sure had to work for it.

He eventually defeated Colin Coben, who like Klughart is always in the hunt for each Cooke title, in a two-hole playoff for the tournament victory.

Klughart entered the day with a five-stroke lead, but said he was “sloppy” at times during the final round. Couple that with Coben getting some clutch birdies on the back-nine, and that five stroke lead disappeared to force playoff holes.

“I let Colin right back in the tournament, it’s not a guy you’d want to give a chance to around this golf course, for sure,” Klughart said. “He rattled off a few birdies and put pressure on me. I had a bad last hole, but it’s nice to come out on top in the playoff holes.”

Regardless of the scare received from Coben, it’s still Klughart’s second straight May Day tournament. Last year, he received a lot of confidence after the early win, and was able to carry that over to the rest of the year.

“It kind of kickstarted my year last year, and I had a strong year. It’s always nice to get a win early in the season and build off that. It wasn’t the prettiest, but it was good.

On the ladies’ side, Andrea Ring fell one stroke short of defending her title. She was surpassed by Pauline McDougall by a single stroke.
