Community Pow Wow set to go

May 19, 2018 | 8:00 AM

The thundering of the big drum will fill Kinsmen Park this weekend.

The Heart of the Youth Community Pow Wow will open with a grand entry at 10 a.m. Friday, May 25 at Kinsmen Park.

“In past years there has been an annual Pow Wow organized by community school coordinators that involved student [and] youth participation as organizers, attendees, drummers, dancers and volunteers,” organizers said in a statement.

Many schools still promote Pow Wow dancing, hoop dancing and traditional drumming, organizers said, but having a community Pow Wow provides those same students with a place to showcase their talents.

Elder Liz Settee from P.A. Outreach helped organize the event. Funding was secured and local businesses have stepped up to support the cause. Youths were also included in every step of the planning and preparation for the Pow Wow.

The organizing committee previously appeared before city council, where they asked the councillors and Mayor Greg Dionne to attend the event to show their support. The Pow Wow’s poster, which was designed by local students, was also unveiled at that meeting.
