Volunteer search efforts called off, police focusing on river for missing 4-year-old

May 11, 2018 | 5:07 PM

Several witness interviews and evidence have led police to call off the ground search for missing four-year-old Sweetgrass Kennedy as the search is now focused on the North Saskatchewan River, according to an update from Prince Albert Police Service.

Volunteer search efforts are being called off. The search will continue by qualified search and rescue personnel.

Kennedy was reported missing to police on May 10. He was last seen in the 900 Block of Second St. East wearing a light blue Star Wars hoodie and orange Halloween pyjama pants.

Trained Search and Rescue Personnel including a Saskatoon Police Service Air Support Unit along with the Prince Albert Fire Department and Saskatchewan Emergency Management Fire and Safety personnel have been deployed to assist.

Due to the dangers associated with scouring the river bank, emergency personnel are asking the public and volunteers to avoid the area.

Emergency crews thank the public for the overwhelming support in assisting with the search for Sweetgrass.

Police say there is no cause for concern for public safety.

Earlier today, hundreds came together in civilian search groups to hunt for the missing four-year-old. Police asked business owners and the public to review any footage from surveillance cameras taken since 3 p.m. on May 10. Volunteers were gathering at the East End Community Club at 2nd St. and 10th Ave. E.
