Local firefighter named to calendar

May 12, 2018 | 11:00 AM

A volunteer firefighter with the Buckland Fire Department has made the cut for the 2019 Saskatchewan Firefighters’ Calendar.

Chanelle Weir was invited to be at Casino Regina Thursday night for the final selection night.

“I still don’t believe it. The news is still sinking in,” Weir told paNOW on Friday.

The calendars will go on sale this fall and funds raised will help support the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation. Weir said she signed up to compete because she wanted to help the cause.

“It is an important organization that I think is close to everyone’s heart. We all have children or know people that do,” she said.

Weir who said she was also proud to represent the Buckland Fire department, has been told she will represent the month of March. This year marks the second year both men and women will be shown in the calendar.

“I think men and women both being represented in the calendar is just a reflection of the changes in fire departments,” Weir said. “More women are getting into the fire services both volunteer and professional. It is no longer a ‘boys club’.”

In addition to her work with the fire department, Weir also works at the Saskatchewan Penitentiary and co-owns a business in Shellbrook.
