Sentencing date in sight for Amber Alert case

May 8, 2018 | 10:14 AM

Despite several delays, the court case surrounding last summer’s Amber Alert is finally winding its way through the court.

Jerrod Charles previously pleaded guilty to kidnapping and sexual assault charges stemming from the incident last summer. While he awaited sentencing, the court requested a Gladue report to accompany sentencing submissions. A Gladue report is a pre-sentencing report that examines the offender’s Indigenous background.

Charles’ report, which is now submitted, contains 17 documents including medical reports from various provincial agencies. The submission caused several recent adjournments as the Crown asked for some clarity on several sources in the report.

Charles appeared via video for the court hearing Tuesday morning at Prince Albert Provincial Court, and sat quietly in front of the camera. Provincial Court Judge Hugh Harradence hinted he may be in a position to set a sentencing date at the next hearing on May 18.
