Shellbrook music student wins SCMA guitar

A little piece of the Saskatchewan Country Music Awards will play on in Shellbrook.

Thirteen-year-old Rielle Puddicombe won the hand-crafted guitar raffled at the festival in Prince Albert last weekend. The raffle was a fundraiser for the Share The Music Fund, which helps local kids buy instruments.

Rielle, who lives in Shellbrook and takes guitar lessons in Prince Albert, said she loves her new six-string, although keeping it away from her dad looks like it could be a challenge.

“I’m going to keep it at home, but my dad really likes to play it and claim it as his own … but it’s not his,” she told paNOW with a laugh.

Rielle said she plays and listens to a wide variety of musical genres and take lessons in country and bluegrass styles.

The raffle raised $570 for the Share The Music Fund, although local SCMA member David Sinclair said that doesn’t come near the cost of the beautifully-crafted instrument which was built by local hobbyist Darrel Semeniuk.

“I’ve personally played it, as did some of the professionals at the SCMAs, and it’s a beautiful guitar,” he said. “I have three guitars made by Darrel and he does a great job.”
