The Shellbrook RCMP detachment’s parking lot was filled with volunteers and Search and Rescue teams from across the province who hoped to find a missing senior citizen today/

James “Jim” Mumm was reported missing yesterday afternoon. He was last seen walking along Second Ave. W. in Shellbrook on April 24 at roughly 10 a.m.

According to RCMP Insp. Roberta McKale, the North District Operations Officer, search efforts on April 25 encompass the town of Shellbrook and the surrounding area. Volunteers will be checking door-to-door while searching treed areas and the golf course.

“We’re also encouraging homeowners to check their properties, their sheds, under their vehicles, everything,” McKale said.

She said search efforts included using a plane which was was deployed overnight. The aircraft used heat sensing technology to try and locate Mumm.

“No heat signature was found,” McKale said. “They even picked up dogs and deer last night, so we’re pretty satisfied that if he was out walking in that specific area we would have found him.”

The inspector said even though no heat signature was found, it doesn’t rule out the possibility that Mumm could have found shelter before the area was searched as temperatures dropped overnight.

Family who addressed search and rescue personnel and volunteers while police were being briefed expressed concerns about Mumm’s wellbeing due to Parkinson’s disease. They said his muscles can seize up when he does not take his medication, which he did not have on him and hasn’t taken in nearly 24 hours.

Mumm’s family members have set up a social media page to provide updates on the situation.
