Northern ice roads closed for the year

Apr 18, 2018 | 5:00 PM

Two ice highways in northern Saskatchewan have officially been closed down for the year.

The ice highway connecting Fond du Lac to the rest of the province closed April 6, according to Steve Shaheen from the Ministry of Highways. This year’s closure date was on par with previous years, he said, despite the unusually-cold temperatures.

The ice thickness for the road to Fond du Lac was first measured in January, Shaheen said, and those results showed the ice was roughly 51 cm thick. Measurements taken in the middle of February showed the ice was roughly 76 cm thick. Shaheen said the thickness remained around 76 centimeters until the road was closed April 6.

Typically the ice roads are open until March 31, however the ministry has worked to ensure the roads are open as long as possible in order to maximize the flow of goods to and from the northern community.
