A lesson in agriculture

Apr 12, 2018 | 5:00 PM

Over 700 children from Prince Albert and area can now confidently say they know how to milk a cow, and what dangers exist around farm equipment.

The Ag Education showcase was held Wednesday and Thursday on the Prince Albert Exhibition grounds, split up between the exhibition centre itself and the Archie Anderson barn. Inside the exhibition centre, there were a number of ag-related vendors on hand to teach the children about a variety of farm related subjects including safety, composting, auctioneering and where their food comes from. Kirsten Falzarano, program coordinator with Agriculture in the Classrooom Saskatchewan, said the children seemed very engaged.

“You know they get fed here too so they are pumped about that, and seeing all the animals that’s of course the best part and the favourite part,” she said.

Falzarano said every station was designed to be hands-on and interactive so the children were doing things rather than just being talked to.

Andre Bonneau with the Ministry of Agriculture was there to teach the children about the dangers around farm equipment, and brought in a large tractor to use for his demonstration.

“It’s much more relevant with farm kids but I think in general I think most kids can learn a lot from just large equipment, whether it’s city vehicles or vehicles owned by their grandparents or uncles,” he said.

Sawyer Mamchur, a Grade 5 student at Shellbrook Elementary, said he learned a lot from Bonneau’s demonstration.

“I grew up on a farm and I didn’t know there were that many blind spots,” he said.

Isabella Peters is a Grade 4 student at Queen Mary School in Prince Albert and said she learned a lot as well.

“We learned about different kinds of animals including bees and how they are going extinct, and we learned about how a cow gets milked,” she said.

Peters said her favourite part of the day was learning more about her favourite animal, the bison.
