Fun and Fitness Corporate Challenge seeks participants

Apr 12, 2018 | 10:00 AM

An organization working to benefit youth sports is looking for adults who want to join in the fun.

The KidSport Fun and Fitness Corporate Challenge wasn’t hosted in Prince Albert last year, but it’s taking place this year on May 26. The corporate challenge aims to bring the business community of Prince Albert together to raise money for local kids. Organizers with the Prince Albert chapter said they hope to have 20 teams competing in the day-long challenge, and 14 groups have confirmed their participation in the event so far.

“The participants in this event will be adults,” Dwight Bergstrom, president of KidSport Prince Albert, said, adding the challenge gives groups a chance “to get together, team-build amongst themselves, get a little exercise and have a really fun day.”

Bergstrom said the participants will compete for points in different sports events at the Alfred Jenkins Fieldhouse, and all funds raised through the Fun and Fitness Corporate Challenge stay in Prince Albert to help pay sports registration fees for children who qualify for the funding. He said the organization covers up to $500 for registration fees per applicant until there are no more dollars left. KidSport was able to help youth out until the end of September last year, he said, meaning roughly 350 kids were able to participate in local sports, with an average cost of $250 per applicant.

The organization relies on funding from other local charitable groups and events to provide for youths who want to participate in sports, and the need for KidSport help is growing in the Gateway to the North.

“There’s about 4,600 kids, probably, in Prince Albert that would qualify for our funding if they applied for it,” Bergstrom said.

The cost of food for the day is covered in the $800 registration fee, and Bergstrom said the day concludes with a buffet supper and awards presentation.

“We’re really hoping to make it a good fundraiser for KidSport, and make it a fun team-building day for people that come and attend,” Bergstrom said.
