Man accused of attacking seniors with shovel a no-show in court

Apr 9, 2018 | 5:00 PM

An arrest warrant was issued today for the man accused of attacking a group of seniors with a shovel outside a gospel show last month.

Jason C. LePage failed to appear in Prince Albert Provincial Court Monday morning. LePage, 41, is facing two counts of aggravated assault and one count of assault in relation to an incident outside Parkland Hall March 25.

While the outward wounds have healed for the most part, the alleged victims in the attack say they’re still reeling emotionally and the incident has left them deeply shaken. The alleged victims in the incident were in court Monday.

“I’ve had a headache pretty much since it happened … the outside injuries healed but inside, it’s a different story. There’s still a lot of turmoil,” Tim Dyck told paNOW outside court Monday.

Dyck, 52, and his wife, Carol, 72, were attacked outside Parkland Hall as they arrived for an evening gospel show. Tim is a musician and was planning to perform in a gospel show at the hall.

Tim said he now takes extra precautions while driving and out in the community.

“I change my route all the time now, to work, back, or wherever I’m going,” he said. “I see a van of that similar colour, and I cringe, and I look in my rear-view mirror and I make sure that they’re not following.”

Police said the incident happened after a man began following a vehicle as they drove to the hall, driving aggressively and honking his horn. The man then allegedly got out of his vehicle in the parking lot at the hall and began hitting a man in the face.

Another local senior citizen, Wilf Savisky, 75, intervened in the incident, hitting the alleged suspect with his snow shovel. Savisky, a retired police sergeant, said in an interview with paNOW last month that he received some minor injuries after the suspect hit him with a metal shovel in the altercation.

On Monday, Carol Dyck became emotional as she talked about the incident. She said she has trouble lifting her arm and is afraid to leave the house. She said she hasn’t gone dancing since the incident two weeks ago. Tim and Carol said they were disappointed the accused in the case did not attend court Monday.

The allegations against LePage have not been proven in court.
