Public invited to participate in city’s first Social Master Plan

Mar 20, 2018 | 8:00 AM

In an effort to identify various social issues in Prince Albert, city staffers are developing a Social Master Plan.

The plan will aim to examine what residents value and what issues they face on a day-to-day basis, all in an effort to find solutions and increase the quality of life as the city grows.

An online survey is available for the public to provide feedback. The project is in cooperation and comes from the Community Networking Coalition (CNC), which works to develop inclusive and healthy communities. CNC Coordinator Delphine Melchert said the plan will give a voice to who Prince Albert is as a community and act as a guiding document for future projects.

“We believe that together, through citizen engagement, an accurate picture of our community will emerge, giving us an opportunity to use our limited resources in a more directed, focused and effective manner,” Melchert said in a release.

Craig Guidinger, the city’s director of planning and development services, said the final document will assist service groups and planners like himself as they improve on community services.

“My focus as a resident might not be the same as someone else’s focus. I think getting that collective vision as our community as a whole is extremely important,” he said. “When you start grinding down into social issues, to get that collective vision and purpose is important.”

The survey takes a few minutes and asks respondents to rank and outline issues that affect the community, from drug and alcohol abuse to mental health and diversity. The questions are to rank and determine a residents’ sense of values such as the protection of the environment, their sense of belonging, a need for a healthy lifestyle and access to services and culture.

The survey can be filled out online or paper copies can be download and dropped off on the third floor of City Hall or emailed to jolmstead@citypa.com.
