Floral shop robber receives additional jail time

Mar 16, 2018 | 5:00 PM

A man who threatened a Prince Albert floral shop clerk with a meat cleaver, will serve nearly two more years in jail.

Austin Fiddler, 21, did not say a word Friday morning as the judge at Prince Albert Provincial Court imposed a 27-month jail sentence. Fiddler received five months credit for time he already spent in custody.

The robbery happened in January, 2016. After receiving the threat, the clerk failed to open the cash register which led to Fiddler grabbing store merchandise before he exited the business. He was arrested soon after. Court learned the store clerk quit her job as a result of the trauma she suffered.

Provincial Court Judge Earl Kalenith said there was a significant impact on the victim in this case, and also acknowledged Fiddler showed remorse by entering a guilty plea.

According to the pre-sentence report, Fiddler struggles with addictions, after enduring both physical and mental abuse as a child. He also is diagnosed with attention deficit disorder as well as depression.

The Crown sought a three-year jail sentence while the defence requested a two-year sentence.
