Business owners beware of counterfeit bills: P.A. Police

Mar 15, 2018 | 12:00 PM

There is counterfeit currency floating around Prince Albert, and the city police have warned businesses to use caution when accepting large bills.

“There has been a recent surge of counterfeit bills in Prince Albert, with three incidents reported by businesses so far in 2018 and 12 complaints of suspected counterfeit bills from 2017,” Police Spokesperson Alanna Adamko said in a statement.

In 2016 and 2015 the police responded to just two incidents of counterfeiting, Adamko noted.

The most common types of currency involved in the recent incidents are $100 and $50 bills, police said. Businesses have the right to request identification or refuse to accept a bill if they suspect a counterfeit.

According to police, the Bank of Canada recommends using a “touch and tilt” method to check for possible forgeries. Touch the bills to feel for the raised surfaces, and tilt it to see if the visual security features engage, such as the colour-changing metallic portraits.

Any businesses who suspect they have been the victim of counterfeiting were asked to report the incident to the Prince Albert Police Service.

Police also provided serial numbers recorded in recent counterfeit cases, which businesses should watch out for. Police said to beware of $20 bills marked FDV3685454, $50 bills marked LGQ03229158, and $100 bills labelled EKR2223601.
