Big weekend for P.A.’s high school athletes

High school athletes from Prince Albert had a busy weekend.

At the wrestling provincial championships at Mount Royal, Saskatoon there was plenty of hardware for local students. Cole Sanderson took home gold in the male 69 kg category, and Kalyn Sanderson claimed first place in the female 68 kg.

Two Carlton students ended up facing off against each other for the female 90 kg final. Maggie Tiessen took on Josee Trzakowski, with Tiessen coming out with the first-place finish.

Danika Lalonde, Leah Mason, Samantha Paradis and Colby Thomas brought home silver medals, while Blake Michelle and Donovan Neudorf captured bronze titles.

Curling:

Meanwhile, at the provincial boys’ curling championships in Spiritwood, St. Mary’s fell short of a third-place finish after their 9-1 defeat in the bronze medal match.

Basketball:

In the basketball conference playdowns, Birch Hills won their 3-A division conference 111-78 against Sandy Bay. PACI fell 109-49 to Birch Hills in the semis.

Coming up:

The Carlton Sr. Girls’ Basketball team travels to Weyburn for regionals, and the school’s senior boys’ team will be headed to Warman. The top two teams from each event will qualify for Hoopla
