Raiders drop Rebels for second straight road win

Feb 23, 2018 | 11:17 PM

It took a full sixty minutes, and an impressive effort by the penalty killers, as the Prince Albert Raiders dropped the Red Deer Rebels 3-2 Friday night to make it a perfect 2-0 start to the team’s Central Division road trip.

For the second straight game, the Raiders got on the board in the opening seconds, with Kody McDonald scoring his 31st of the season just 14 seconds in to put the visitors on the board before Jordy Stallard bookended the first period with a late tally, making it 2-0 after one.

“[Scoring early] gets you emotionally attached to the game, and I think it was important because we had a day off yesterday, it was a rest day, and to score early to get going, I thought our first period was solid,” said Raiders Associate Coach Dave Manson.

In the second, the Rebels were able to dig into the Raider lead as Alex Morozoff capitalized on a turnover to beat goaltender Ian Scott, then Josh Tarzwell deflected a point shot through traffic and past Scott on a Rebel power play to draw the game even at 2-2.

Before the middle frame was over, however, Brett Leason found some room off the wall and walked into the slot before beating Rebels goaltender Ethan Anders to put Prince Albert back in front. With the goal, Leason has now scored in five straight games.

With a 3-2 lead in the third, the Raiders didn’t have an easy conclusion to the game as they were forced to kill off four straight minor penalties, including a full two minute 5-on-3 to seal the win. The penalty kill unit was up to the task, with a little help from the goalpost on one golden opportunity for the Rebels, and the Raiders managed to keep it out of their net in the final frame.

The Raider penalty kill unit finished seven for eight, while Red Deer killed off the lone Prince Albert power play.

“I thought our second period we gave them some momentum with our puck management, and I thought the third was pretty even considering all the penalties we had to kill. I thought we did what we had to do, we dug in, and we got the points,” said Manson.

Raider goaltender Ian Scott was named the first sta for his 29 save effort, earning his second straight win. The Calgary native has now stopped 85 of 91 shots faced in his last three starts.

Prince Albert will now conclude their three-game swing in Edmonton against the Oil Kings on Saturday night. Prince Albert dropped the last meeting between the two at Rogers Place, a 4-1 Oil Kings loss back on Dec 2. More recently, the Raiders thumped the Oil Kings 9-2 at the Art Hauser Centre on Jan 27.
