Five families in Red Cross care after early morning house fire

Feb 23, 2018 | 4:00 PM

Five families are displaced following an early morning fire in Prince Albert.

Around 4:45 a.m. this morning, Feb. 23, fire crews responded to a blaze in a mixed residential and commercial building in the 100 block of Ninth St. E. The building was evacuated and no injuries were reported.

Damage is reportedly limited to a single suite, however, smoke and water damage did occur to adjoining units.

According to Sue Laflamme, community outreach coordinator with the Red Cross for Prince Albert, seven adults and three children were taken into care by the personal disaster assistance team this morning and have been put up in hotels.

“We provide 72-hour assistance and that includes hotel rooms, meals and we also provide clothing for people,” Laflamme said.

While she adds it is “always traumatic when something like this happens,” the three days of assistance can help families remain calm and speed up arrangements for them to get back on their feet.

An investigation remains ongoing into the cause of the fire. The residents are expected to be displaced until remediation efforts can begin. All services provided to the families through the personal disaster assistance program stem from donations. Anyone wanting to assist can make donations online or stop by the local Red Cross office.
