Regina and Prairie Central jump into top 3 at halfway point of Winter Games

Saskatoon remained way out in front after three days of competition at the 2018 Saskatchewan Winter Games, but Regina and Prairie Central have now jumped into second and third.

With 61 total medals, including 22 gold, 22 silver, and 17 bronze, Saskatoon has quite the advantage over Regina, who sit second with 43 medals (19 gold, 10 silver, 14 bronze). Prairie Central was three medals behind Regina, with 40 (9 gold, 19 silver, 12 bronze).

After two straight days in second place, the ‘home’ Rivers West district is now a close fourth, with 36 medals (14 gold, 14 silver, eight bronze).

Lakeland is a distant fifth with 21 medals, while South West has 18, and South East has 17. Parkland Valley’s 10 medals have them in eighth, while the North district has three medals, which puts them in ninth.

What to watch Thurs., Feb. 22:

Bowling

Both bowling and Special Olympics bowling take over Gutters on Thursday, starting with team male round robin action at 8 a.m.

Each district’s male team will get four games in (at 8 a.m., 9 a.m., 10 a.m., 11 a.m.) before team co-ed Special Olympics bowling takes over at 12:30 p.m. Those games go all afternoon, before female round robin bowling action begins at 5:30 p.m. and runs until 8:30 p.m.

Wrestling

Although wrestling started Wednesday, there’s a ton of competition still to happen in a jam-packed Thursday at the Don Ross gymnasium. Individual male and female matches in multiple weight categories begin at 8 a.m., and run all the way until after 5 p.m.

Curling

The first female curling matches begin at 8:30 a.m. Thursday with two sheets in action. All four districts then hit the ice at noon and 7 p.m.

Badminton

Round robin play for team U-19 mixed badminton begins at 9 a.m. Thursday morning at the Nations West Fieldhouse. There are subsequent matches scheduled for 1 p.m. and 5 p.m.

Hockey

The first female hockey games begin at 9 a.m. at the Battleford and Don Ross Arenas. Games will follow at noon, 4:30 p.m., and 7:30 p.m., making for a busy first day of action.

Table Tennis

Team cadet female table tennis kicks off at 9 a.m.at the John Paul II gymnasium, followed by team cadet male. Team junior female and male begins at 1:30 p.m., followed by singles cadet female and male at 5:30 p.m.

Figure Skating

Free skate and pattern dance are both scheduled for the first day of figure skating competition at the Civic Centre.

The Class-1 female free skate begins at 10:15 a.m., followed by the mixed pattern dance at 11:30 a.m. The women’s free skate resumes at 12:05 p.m., before the male free skate takes off at 2:55 p.m.

Cross-country Skiing

The male and female interval start classics will take place at Blue Mountain on Thursday, starting at 10:30 a.m. Four races will take place: the 5 km junior female interval start, the 5 km junior male interval start, the 8 km senior female interval start, and the 8 km senior male interval start.

Snowboarding

Over at Table Mountain, snowboarding kicks off at 11 a.m. with the slopestyle U-14 and U-17 male and female qualification runs. The final races all begin at 1:30 p.m., with the medal ceremony to follow.

The nine districts in the Winter Games are broken up as follows: Prairie Central includes Humboldt, Warman, and Wynyard; Rivers West includes the Battlefords, Kindersley, Lloydminster, and Meadow Lake; Lakeland includes Prince Albert, Melfort, and Tisdale; South West includes Assiniboia, Moose Jaw, and Swift Current; South East includes Estevan and Weyburn; Parkland Valley’s region includes Yorkton, Melville and Kamsack; and the North district includes communities such as La Loche, La Ronge, and Buffalo Narrows.
