Levee breaks as Raiders flood Hurricanes

Feb 21, 2018 | 10:44 PM

After struggling to score against the Regina Pats on Monday, the levee broke in Lethbridge on Wednesday night for the Prince Albert Raiders as they took an 8-2 decision over the Hurricanes.

Brett Leason scored for the fourth straight game just 16 seconds into the game, and Sean Montgomery made it 2-0 just minutes later. The Raiders would never relinquish the lead from that point forward as they kicked off a three-game Central Division road trip with a win.

“You can’t get them all if you don’t get the first one and coming in here to Lethbridge where they’ve been playing good of late we knew it would be a tough test, and it worked out for us tonight,” said Raiders Associate Coach Dave Manson. “Now we head to a tough building in Red Deer on Friday against another team that’s been hot.”

Coming into action on Wednesday, the Hurricanes had won three games in a row, and seven of their last ten while the Raiders had fallen in back-to-back contests against Brandon and Regina.

With a 2-0 lead, the Raiders penalty kill was put to work and looked impressive keeping Lethbridge off the board on back to back power plays in the first period.

The Hurricanes would cut the Raider lead to 2-1 later in the first as Jadon Joseph beat Ian Scott, but Justin Nachbaur put Prince Albert ahead 3-1 heading into the first intermission.

In the second, The Hurricanes had another two power play opportunities in the opening minutes and looked a lot more dangerous than in the first, but Scott and the Raiders PK were up to the task to keep the two-goal lead. The Raiders penalty kill finished a perfect seven for seven on the night.

From there, the Raiders continued to build up their lead as Curtis Miske and Cole Fonstad both chipped in to make it 5-2 after two, despite a 19-9 shot advantage for Lethbridge in the period.

“I thought Scotty made a couple saves in the second that really kept us above them, and that’s what you want to see is for him to at least give you a chance to win which he did,” said Manson.

Scott would be beat once more in the third, finishing with 35 saves on 37 shots, but the Raiders struck with three more from Nachbaur, Kody McDonald, and Sergei Sapego to finish off the 8-2 victory.

The road trip continues Friday as the Raiders take on the Red Deer Rebels before finishing on Saturday in Edmonton against the Oil Kings.
