School zones cleared during student break

Feb 20, 2018 | 4:00 PM

School’s out for the rest of the week, so city crews are getting on with their February snow clearing around every school in the city.

“We try and get into the school zones when the kids are out because all the vehicles that are [usually] parked around these areas aren’t there,” Brent Kennedy, the city’s roadways manager, said. “So we go in there this time of the year before the main run-off in spring.”

While there has been less thaw-freeze concerns for crews to contend with this winter the particularly low temperatures are still causing issues.

“We have to make more than one pass over the streets because the snow and ice is still sticking to the pavement with this cold weather,” Kennedy said, although he was confident all school zones would be done come Friday.

paNOW heard some concerns that certain schools were plowed last week already but Kennedy assured the public there was no preferential treatment and every location would get dealt with as soon as possible.

“We were clearing some of the main roads last week and if they were on school zones and there were no vehicles in the way we’d go ahead and do the school too, so we don’t have to double back later,” he said.

As always with any city plowing, signs will go up at least 12 hours before an area is set to be cleared. If vehicles are not out of the way fines can be issued or the tow trucks may be brought in.
