Raiders run into red-hot goaltender for second straight game

Feb 19, 2018 | 6:14 PM

For the second game in a row, the Prince Albert Raiders ran into some hot goaltending.

Max Paddock made 37 saves on 38 shots on the way to the Regina Pats’ 3-1 victory on Family Day Monday at the Art Hauser Centre. That comes after the Raiders outshot the Brandon Wheat Kings 42-13 on Saturday, but fell 4-3 in Brandon.

We generated a lot of chances. I had my arms in the air when we had our goalie pulled thinking [Raiders forward Parker] Kelly had scored,” Raiders head coach Marc Habscheid said. “I thought their goaltender was outstanding, much like the guy in Brandon. It’s disappointing, because again I thought we were far the better team and deserved a better fate. But it’s not about moral victories now, it’s about points. We have to find a way to get them.”

With that, the Raiders have one win in their past six games (1-5). They fall to 23-25-9-2 on the season.

It was a rocky start for the Raiders, who were down two goals and two men after the first period.

Kody McDonald went neck first into the boards after absorbing a very awkward hit from Pats defenceman Liam Schioler. Schioler was ejected from the game after he was given a major penalty for checking from behind.

McDonald needed assistance from both athletic therapist Duane Bartley and Raiders forward Parker Kelly to get to the bench. But he was able to recover in time for the start of the second period, and played a long 1:20 shift at the start of the period.

“He’s a tough guy. It’s not like he lays around on the ice, if he’s laying down, you know he’s hurt,” Habscheid said. “We certainly don’t preach for our guys to lay down unless they’re hurt… He was lucky. It was an unfortunate hit, it was a tough hit, but he’s tough and was able to gather himself for the second period.”

Before the game even started, Vojtech Budik was announced as a late scratch and did not appear in the game despite being listed on the top pairing with Brayden Pachal.

“It’s an injury for sure, it’s not like we healthy scratched him or anything,” Habscheid said. “It was an injury, he tried to go and he just couldn’t go.”

The Pats were able to take the lead on a pair of deflections in the first period, with Nick Henry’s shot going off the stick of Raiders D-man Konrad Belcourt and into the top corner. Late in the first, Sam Steel’s pass took a deflection right to Jared Legien, who beat Raiders goaltender Ian Scott down low.

The Raiders answered with their lone goal in the second period, with Brett Leason beating Paddock on the blocker side. The Raiders then piled on the pressure in the third period outshooting the Pats 14-7, but couldn’t beat Paddock.
