Mintos finish off season in 3rd, ready for rivaling Contacts

After their 4-0 victory over the Tisdale Trojans on Saturday, the Prince Albert Mintos finished in third place in the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League regular season with a 32-9-2-1 record.

As a result, the Mintos will get matched up against their biggest rivals in the Midget AAA, the Saskatoon Contacts.

Here’s the opening round schedule.

Game 1- Feb. 23, 7 p.m., Art Hauser Centre

Game 2– Feb. 25, 2:45 p.m., Schroh Arena

Game 3- Feb. 28, 7 p.m., Art Hauser Centre

Game 4– March 2, 8 p.m., Schroh Arena*

Game 5– March 4, 7 p.m., Art Hauser Centre*

The Mintos and Contacts had four close battles this season. Not only was every game decided by one goal, two of them required overtime.

The Mintos won the season series 3-1, winning the first three games 3-2 on Oct. 5, 3-2 in OT on Nov. 2 and 2-1 in OT on Jan. 11. The Contacts won the final meeting, 3-2 on Feb. 8.

The Contacts are led by Raiders prospect Davin Griffin, who has 17 goals and 35 points in 39 games this year. The Raiders drafted Griffin in the fifth round, 100th overall in the 2017 WHL Bantam Draft, after he led Bantam AA with 50 goals.

The Contacts also feature Raiders’ 2017 first rounder Cohner Saleski, who has 5 goals and 15 points in 24 games.

For the Mintos, they are led by Josh Pillar, the top rookie point-getter in the SMAAAHL with 21 goals and 50 points in 44 games.
