Pelican Narrows rallies in support of Boushie family

Feb 18, 2018 | 1:00 PM

A northern community has collectively gathered to show their support for the family of Colten Boushie.

Mary Jane Michel organized the rally in Pelican Narrows on Saturday, after a not guilty verdict was handed to Gerald Stanley in the 2016 shooting death of Boushie. Several rallies were hosted across the country in the days following the decision.

“This rally [will] be a continuation to show our support for that family,” Michel said. “We haven’t forgotten, [and] we won’t forget the verdict was [handed down] a week ago.”

Michel said she is still very angry and sad about the decision. She participated in a rally in Boushie’s honour in Saskatoon on Feb. 10 and wanted to bring the movement to Pelican Narrows.

“I believe it can be done here… even if I’m the only one that has to walk, I will,” Michel said.

She wants youth in the community, who make up roughly 50 percent of the residents in Pelican Narrows, to know they don’t have to be worried about injustices committed against them.

She also didn’t want parents to have to worry their children might find themselves in a dangerous situation.

“It is a worry… to have to tell your kids ‘don’t go there, don’t do this.’ We shouldn’t have to worry, we should be [allowed to] freely move in this country, within Saskatchewan, but it’s just not happening.” Michel said. “Now we have a fear… anyplace my child goes, he or she can be shot, or attacked.”
