Muskoday man accused of violent assault

A 19-year-old man, accused of attacking a stranger with a baseball bat, was granted bail Friday morning in Prince Albert Provincial Court.

The alleged incident happened July 26, 2017, on the grounds of Berezowsky school during the summer break. According to the Crown’s statement of facts, the 18-year-old male victim was sharing a cigarette with one of his female friends when the pair was approached by a group of three men. One of men allegedly pulled out a bat without provocation and hit the victim in the head multiple times.

The victim was taken to hospital in Saskatoon with a broken hand, and suffered seizures after the alleged attack. He was found to have a brain bleed, and was placed in a medically induced coma. The victim has largely recovered after spending more than three weeks in intensive care, but according to the Crown there is still some uncertainty about the long-term effects of the injuries.

Judge Hugh Harradence said the Crown had a “compelling” case, but noted 19-year-old Glen Bear had no criminal record and had not displayed any violence since the incident. The defence argued there were inconsistencies in the story of the witnesses, regarding what the attacker was wearing and what type of weapon was used.
