Arctic weather continues to grip Prince Albert

Dec 29, 2017 | 9:43 AM

A blast of Arctic air has plunged Saskatchewan into a deep freeze that is expected to linger for several days, according to Environment Canada meteorologist John Paul Cragg.

He said the extremely cold temperatures are expected to linger until at least Jan. 2.

“We have a ridge of high pressure sitting in Alberta and it’s just pumping Arctic air into Saskatchewan and Manitoba. We’re seeing highs of -25 C for daytime highs and -35 C for overnight lows with wind chills below -40 C,” Cragg said.

An extreme cold warning, issued by Environment Canada, is in effect for nearly the entire province and country.

Reporter Taylor MacPherson talks about the Arctic deep freeze gripping the nation, when it might let up, and has some fun with boiling water.

For those who still have travelling to do this holiday season, packing along a cold weather kit is essential.

Tyler McMurchy, an SGI spokesperson, recommends including things like warm clothes, a shovel, blankets or sleeping bags, a snow brush and ice scraper, booster cables, a flashlight, flares, a candle and some tin cups to melt snow for water, and some non-perishable foods.

Lyle Karasiuk, from Parkland Ambulance, echoed many of McMurchy’s sentiments. He added a scarf should be included in cold weather kits for vehicles. Scarves can be hung from windows to alert people of your presence.
