Food Bank game merges rivalry with special cause

A local sports rivalry and an important seasonal cause merge at the new Carlton High gym Tuesday evening.

The Carlton and St. Mary senior boys basketball teams meet for the annual Food Bank game.

“These two teams have been going at it for as long as anybody can remember,” Carlton High School Athletic Director Tim Strom told paNOW. “It’s a game they both get extremely excited to play; the rivalry is always intense.”

But away from the court there’s a bigger picture not lost on the players, and Strom hopes, the spectators as well.

“We want to get together for a great competition, but also recognize the importance of giving back to the community this time of year,” he said.

Strom said cash donations make a big impression and that’s what they’d like the audience to bring. A donation table will be set up at the gym entrance.

Carlton point guard Ben Grassick is eagerly anticipating the occasion and acknowledged giving to people in need “is what really stands out more than just the game of basketball.”

But Grassick doesn’t deny the rivalry is a crowd-puller.

“Having the two big high schools keeping this tradition going makes it stronger. If you get the win, you can hold it over your friends,” he said.

Tip-off is at 5:30 pm.
