Manslaughter suspect to try for bail

Dec 13, 2017 | 1:00 PM

A bail hearing was set today for a 21-year-old accused of manslaughter.

Christian Charles, 21, is currently in custody facing a charge of manslaughter in connection with the homicide of Damian Roy Ballantyne. Police were called to a home in the 300-block of Ninth St. E. to assist paramedics on March 22, after the 34-year-old victim was found unresponsive. Ballantyne succumbed to his injuries before he could be taken to hospital, police said.

Charles was arrested early in the investigation as a suspect, along with Austin Janvier, 23. According to police, both men were released without charges, but they were arrested again Nov. 15 and charged with manslaughter.

Both suspects appeared this morning in a Prince Albert courtroom, Janvier in person and Charles over a video link from Prince Albert Correctional Centre. They wore green and grey correctional centre uniforms, and neither spoke during this morning’s proceedings.
