Ex-Raider Gennaro delivers the dagger late against his former team

Dec 12, 2017 | 9:28 PM

Matteo Gennaro has a knack of scoring against the team that drafted him, the Prince Albert Raiders, but he may have saved his best performance on Tuesday.

Gennaro scored with just 21 seconds left in regulation to break the deadlock and give his Swift Current Broncos (23-7-2-0) the 2-1 regulation win over the Raiders (12-13-5-2).

Gennaro, the overager originally drafted 41st overall by the Raiders in the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft, has been a thorn in the Raiders’ side in the three games he’s played against them.

While still with the Calgary Hitmen to start the year, Gennaro scored two goals, including with 1:56 left in regulation to force overtime on Sept. 29. Then last week, Gennaro had four assists in the Broncos’ 5-4 overtime victory.

It was a frustrating night for the Raiders, who according to associate coach Dave Manson, spent the “first half of the game killing penalties.”

The Raiders were awarded the first five penalties of the game, and six of the first seven. As you can see down below, that didn’t sit too well with Raiders head coach Marc Habscheid.

The Broncos scored on their sixth power play, with Colby Sissons scoring the go-ahead goal. Cole Fonstad tied the game in the third period, extending his point scoring streak to a career high seven games (three goals, six assists for nine points in that time).

Herold call up

The Raiders announced that 16-year-old defenceman Adam Herold was called up for the week.

The second round pick in the 2016 WHL Bantam Draft is the captain of the Regina Pat Canadians, the second ranked team in the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League. Herold has two goals and 17 points in 24 games with the Pat C’s this year.

Herold made his WHL debut last year with the Raiders on the home opener Sept. 24, 2016. He also made his SJHL debut with the Humboldt Broncos on Oct. 20.

The Raiders were rolling with just six defenceman in recent games before Herold’s call up for this week. Belarussian Sergei Sapego is on the shelf after an upper body injury is leaving him indefinitely out of the lineup and Cody Paivarinta left the team to personal reasons on Nov. 27. Herold was scratched on Tuesday but could appear in the two home games for the Raiders this week.

Two more at home before the holidays

The Raiders will play two more games at the Art Hauser Centre this week before the holiday break, Wednesday against the Lethbridge Hurricanes and Friday against the Kelowna Rockets.

The Raiders are holding a toy drive during Friday’s game called Santa Anonymous for the Salvation Army and Prince Albert Optimist Club.
