The up and downside of warmer weather on the streets

Dec 11, 2017 | 11:16 AM

The good news on our main roads is that they’re drying out, but the downside of all this warmer weather is residential streets are softening up.

And they may stay messy for a while.

The city of Prince Albert’s roadways manager Brent Kennedy said the city doesn’t plan on plowing until after Christmas because of the inconvenience that can cause residents.

“It really benefits the residents for parking in front of their places [by not plowing],” he told paNOW. “No one likes the windrows that we leave behind when we go in there, so hopefully we can make it through until Christmas.”

The plus-zero daytime highs across the region are expected to continue until the end of the week and for Kennedy this is rare.

“Usually we wouldn’t go through such a long spell with [such temperatures],” he said. “We would prefer to see it -10 C to -15 C throughout the winter. Hopefully we get there and stay there.”

Puddling and pooling of melting snow is becoming an issue on street corners, and Kennedy said pedestrian safety was more of an issue than driving conditions at the moment.

“We’ve had some rain again, at night as it’s cooling off and the sidewalks are becoming a bit slippier. We do have city crews going around city facilities and salting sidewalks,” he said.

Environment Canada forecasts the warmer spell won’t end until Saturday when daytime highs return to a more normal -7 C.
