Mustangs bring home silver from provincials

Nov 27, 2017 | 3:25 PM

The Meath Park Mustangs senior boys’ volleyball team finished second at 3A Provincials, held in Kipling over the weekend.

Coach Luke Milburn is very proud of his team and said they worked hard.

“We put in like 250 hours driving around the province… at tournaments and at practice. It was nice to see them get rewarded with a second place finish,” he said

The volleyball program at Meath Park has only been in existence for three years. In the first year, the boys’ team made regionals, and last year the team made it to provincials, but did not place.

The Mustangs were 3-1 at this year’s provincials after round robin play, losing to Island Lake Saturday morning. After wins over Ile-a-la-Crosse and Moose Jaw Cornerstone in the quarter and semi finals, the Mustangs would get a chance at redemption in the final against Island Lake.

Island Lake would win both sets (25-19; 25-15).

“That Island Lake team had our number on Saturday beating us twice… they deserved to win for sure, he said.

Milburn said the kids and their parents deserve all the credit for the work ethic, and he feels lucky to have been a part of it.
