Mintos equipped with new weight room

Prince Albert’s midget ‘AAA’ team has added new equipment to their arsenal.

The Mintos officially unveiled their players’ brand new weight room yesterday. Mintos President Zenon Markowsky said the weight room has contributed to the teams’ efforts on the ice.

“We’re always in pretty good shape, but our problem was strength-wise,” Markowsky said. “We’ve talked about a room like this to eliminate some of the injuries… and I don’t think we’ve had an injury this year yet.”

The president said players don’t get stronger based on play alone; the long season the players face requires stamina

Markowsky said the Mintos board has long pushed to get a weight room for players. Markowsky said players were present to help lay cinderblocks in the summer.

“It was good to see,” Markowsky said. “They had ownership.”

Aside from benefitting players’ conditioning, the room is also used to promote team-building and comradery amongst the Mintos players.

Markowsky said the players are very appreciative of the weight room which was created through the sponsorship. The Northern Lights Development Corporation contributed $8,000. Flaman Fitness also contributed by donating equipment. Exercise bikes along with free weights and a few different work-out machines were provided for players to use.

“It’s functional, safe equipment for the kids. It’s low maintenance, so its stuff that will last a long, long time,” Nadine Robin, from Flaman said. “The kids seem really excited about it.”
