Teen stabbing victim recovering: mother

Oct 19, 2017 | 5:00 PM

A female high school student is recovering after she was stabbed multiple times at a party near Prince Albert, said her mother.

According to Prince Albert RCMP, the girl was stabbed at an outdoor party in the RM of Buckland in the early hours of Sunday morning. Police and paramedics responded, and the girl was taken to hospital in critical condition. The RCMP asked anyone with information about the incident to come forward, and specifically requested any cell phone video captured at the party. This morning, an RCMP spokesperson said she could not provide any updates on the case, and simply said the investigation is ongoing and no charges have yet been laid.

The girl’s mother, who spoke to paNOW on the condition of anonymity, said her daughter underwent emergency surgery when she arrived in hospital, but is now stable, conscious, and speaking.

“She’s in stable condition and getting better, but it’s been a lot of not just physical but emotional trauma,” the girl’s mother said. “It’s going to be a long road for her… She has a lot of scars and it’s not just going to go away.”

The mother could not disclose specifics of the incident itself due to the ongoing police investigation, but said her daughter had no prior connection to the person believed to have been the perpetrator. She said the suspect was asked to leave the party before the incident occurred, and had previously threatened other students.

The victim’s mother said she is very thankful that there were responsible, sober adults present at the party in case of an emergency. The parents drove her injured daughter to meet the ambulance, she said, and likely saved the girl’s life.

The mother said she took exception to comments made Monday by the Sask. Rivers Public School Division. In the immediate aftermath of the incident, Director of Education Robert Bratvold said reports were unconfirmed, but his understanding was the event was a “fairly isolated conflict between a small number of students.”

“This has nothing to do with the school,” the mother said. “I never talked to the guy. He never contacted me once to see how my daughter’s doing.”

According to the victim’s mother, the schools should be doing more to help the students who were left traumatized by the violence they witnessed. To her knowledge, she said, the schools have not had a special assembly to discuss safety or offered any additional counselling. She said students who have visited her daughter say they struggle to sleep and don’t want to go back to school.

It is equally important for the schools and parents to drive home a message of safety and teach youngsters to avoid potentially dangerous situations, she added.

“It’s really important that all of us talk to our kids about safety,” she said. “Just watching out for who’s around you and not putting yourself in a situation where you’re going to get hurt.”

The girl’s mother said she doesn’t know what the future holds for her family, but right now they’re simply trying to stay positive.

“It’s just day by day right now,” she said.
