Olympic curler to host ‘School of Rocks’ in P.A.

An Olympic curler is hoping to grow the sport at the grassroots level by getting kids on the ice.

Silver-medallist Cheryl Bernard is bringing her School of Rocks Youth Curling Camp to Prince Albert, Nov. 18. The program, sponsored by New Holland, is open to youth ages six to 15-years-old and is meant to introduce kids to the sport of curling.

“That is really New Holland’s mandate. They want to expose as many kids as possible to the sport, and we have been doing this across Canada,” Bernard said.

The one day school includes on-ice skills and games led by Bernard, and ends with popcorn and a curling movie.

“Every camp we have done… you can hear kids telling their parents they want to sign up and they want to play,” she said.

Before the School of Rocks camp, Bernard will be joined by retired professional curler and fellow TSN broadcaster Russ Howard in a Friday night spotlight event Nov. 17 in the Cosmo Room at the Prince Albert Golf and Curling Club (PAGCC).

“We will tell some Olympic stories and maybe take a few jabs at each other and just have fun,” she said.

New Holland will donate proceeds from the event to the PAGCC’s youth curling program.
