Saskatchewan households own the most portable gaming systems in Canada

If you live in Saskatchewan, chances are you own a portable gaming system.

According to a survey commissioned by the Consumer Technology Association, one in three households have a portable gaming system such as a Nintendo 3DS, PlayStation Portable or something similar. This is the highest rate in Canada.

John Chanier of Microplay said he felt the results were similar in the Prince Albert area.

“These portable consoles are very kid friendly. With that, you find games such as Mario and Pokémon on these portable systems,” he said. “This is the reason why it’s all in these households. I do find that they are pushed towards kids, but if an adult plays these games, they are going to find content in the games geared towards adults as well as kids.”

Chanier thought new parents are part of a generation when gaming became popular, so it could be something they can share with their children.

The study anticipated roughly 90 per cent of homes would buy a virtual reality headset for the first time within the next year or so, and currently 400,000 Canadian households now own a drone.

In addition, roughly 96 per cent of households own a television, 80 per cent own a smart phone and 73 per cent own some sort of computer whether it be a laptop or desktop.

In a release sent by the Consumer Technology Association, senior director of market research Steve Koenig said he doesn’t see the handheld trend curtailing any time soon.

“Ownership of connected devices is skyrocketing, as more Canadians discover and embrace the many benefits and conveniences these innovations deliver,” he said. “Canadians increasingly see connectivity as an essential part of their daily lives, whether at home, in office or on the go.”
