Wheat Kings topple Raiders

Oct 14, 2017 | 10:22 PM

The Brandon Wheat Kings took a 3-0 lead over the Prince Albert Raiders in the first period, and were able to keep the comeback effort at bay as Brandon took Saturday night’s contest 5-3 and extended their winning streak to five games.

Jordy Stallard scored a pair of power play goals in the second period and Cole Fonstad converted an unassisted breakaway in the third, while Curtis Meger made 27 saves in the loss.

“I think we played bad, we have to be better,” said defenceman Vojtech Budik after the game. “Everybody has to be better, we have to compete and play harder.”

Brandon opened the scoring on the power play in the first period as Connor Gutenberg found a rebound on a Schael Higson shot with 8:12 remaining in the opening frame. Former Minto and Prince Albert native Braden Schneider assisted on the goal, picking up his fourth point of the year early in his rookie campaign with the Wheat Kings.

Ty Lewis was credited with the second Wheat Kings goal just 37 seconds later on an unfortunate play as Vojtech Budik attempted to clear the puck during a scramble in front of Meger’s net, but ended up hitting teammate Jordy Stallard with the shot before it bounced back past Meger and into the net to make it 2-0. Before the period was over, Evan Weinger converted a back door pass from Stelio Mattheos to finish a three-on-two rush to make it 3-0 after the first period.

In the second, the Raiders found some life as Jordy Stallard struck on a mid-period power play, converting a pass from Fonstad with a one-timer past Wheat Kings goaltender Logan Thompson to make it 3-1. Just five minutes later, the duo connected again as Fonstad fed Stallard who walked in and beat Thompson glove side for his second power play goal of the period.

Unfortunately for Prince Albert, the comeback was stemmed as Mattheos snuck a sharp-angle shot past Meger for a power play goal late in the period, making it 4-2 Wheat Kings after the second.

“We talked about the first period, it was bad and we had to improve everything in the second,” commented Budik. “We did and scored two goals on the power play. We need to keep going and win tomorrow.”

Brandon extended the lead in the third on a scramble play at the net as Gunnar Weigleitner put it home for his fifth of the year, but the Raiders cut into the lead once again as Fonstad forced a turnover at the Wheat Kings blueline before walking in and scoring with a backhand move. That was as close as the Raiders would get as Thompson kept the remaining efforts out of the net, making it 5-3.
