Oct 12, 2017 | 8:00 AM

A Sandy Bay youth charged with second-degree murder will make his first court appearance this afternoon.

The young man was charged after Sandy Bay RCMP responded to a report of an unresponsive adult male on Oct. 9. The victim, 19-year-old Jared Phillip Merasty, received medical treatment at the local health centre but later succumbed to his injuries.

The youth – who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act – was arrested and charged the following day. According to RCMP, he will make his first court appearance this afternoon in Pelican Narrows.

The investigation into Merasty’s death is ongoing, RCMP said, and includes the Major Crimes Unit South and RCMP Identification Section.
