Six points for Stallard as Raiders drop Tigers

Oct 7, 2017 | 10:43 PM

Prince Albert Raiders head coach Marc Habscheid asked for more from his veterans ahead of Saturday’s game in Medicine Hat against the Tigers, and they delivered in a 6-1 victory.

Jordy Stallard led the way with a goal and five assists for six points, Parker Kelly scored twice, Max Martin and Zach Hayes each had a goal, while Cole Fonstad chipped in with three points in the win.

“It was a good answer by the team. The coaches were really honest today, and weren’t happy about last night…nobody was,” said Fonstad after the game. “We had a long talk today and kind of turned it around. I think everyone came in with a different attitude. More energy, more execution, and the outcome was there.”

Curtis Meger had his third straight start in net for the Raiders, stopping 25 of 26 shots for his third win of the season. In the absence of starting goaltender Ian Scott, Meger has run with the job and perfomed admirably for the Raiders, boasting the third best goals against average in the WHL at this point at 2.03.

The Tigers were coming off of an emotional 4-2 win over the Regina Pats on Friday night, but weren’t able to find a similar result tonight against Prince Albert. Starting goaltender Jordan Hollett, in his second game of the season with his new team after coming over from the Pats in the offseason, was relieved in the third period by Duncan McGovern after being beat five times on 19 shots. The Raiders beat McGovern once on two shots.

Special teams were a major factor tonight as the Raiders converted both of their power play opportunities, while Medicine Hat scored once on four power plays.

Tonight’s game was the last of a two-game southern Alberta road swing for the Raiders, earning two of a possible four points in two games. Prince Albert is 3-3-0 through six games, and will host the Regina Pats on Friday night before hitting the road for a pair of games in Brandon against the Wheat Kings on Saturday and Sunday.
