Harvest back on track after wet week

Oct 5, 2017 | 12:00 PM

With some hard work and co-operative weather, harvest in the region has nearly caught up with the five-year average for this time of year.

Many farmers worked long hours to combine before the rainy weekend, although some crop is coming off tough and being placed in aeration bins. Seventy-eight per cent of the crop is now in the bin. This is up from 53 per cent last week, but slightly below the five-year average at 80 per cent.

Early yield estimates vary throughout the region, but range from average to well above average in the region. Spring wheat grades are reported at 70 per cent above average, 25 per cent average, four per cent below average, and one per cent rated as feed.

Several weeks of warm and dry weather are needed in order to finish harvest. Heavy rainfall was received in much of the region, ranging from three mm in the Garrick and Birch Hills areas to 78 mm in the Porcupine Plain area. Many areas reported receiving at least 25 mm of rain. The Porcupine Plain area has reported the most precipitation in the region at 344 mm since April 1.
