The changing face of cheerleading

A local cheerleading team is learning more about the changing face of the sport.

The Prince Albert Cheer Explosion attended the Saskatchewan Cheerleading Association conference over the weekend in Saskatoon. The coaching staff learned about social media marketing and rule changes, among other things.

Sandra Horne, head coach of PACE All-Star Cheerleading said the conference also highlighted breaking stereotypes about cheerleading.

“Back in the day, you used to cheer for a football team, basketball team or volleyball team. Some of the scholastic teams still do that in their schools, but there’s been a shift to competitive cheerleading,” he said.

Horne said cheerleading is even on its way to becoming an Olympic sport and it takes real athleticism to do what they do. Cheerleading squads all across the country are also trying to get more boys involved in the sport.

She added the conference also enabled them to learn more about stunting.

“[We learned about] new stunts, new inversions and new ways of how we can put those stunts out on the floor,” she said. “Things are always evolving.”
