Tisdale teems with teens during student conference

Sep 21, 2017 | 2:00 PM

Over 800 Grade 9 to 12 students from across the province have converged on Tisdale to learn about leadership, mentorship and teamwork skills.

The annual Saskatchewan Leadership Conference is a three-day affair that brings young people together with 200 advisors and inspirational guest speakers.

Randy Kerr, is the principal of the host school, Tisdale Middle and Secondary.

“It’s an opportunity to collaborate, build their own leadership skills and build camaraderie so when they get back to their respective schools they can bring that capacity and integrate it there,” Kerr said.

The focus is very student-centric.

“If you’ve never been part of an experience like this it is astounding,” Kerr said. “[The students] are glowing, they’re excited, they’re anxious to learn. And the networking and relationships that are built…it’s phenomenal.”

An array of guest speakers provide inspiration at the conference, but Kerr said so does the list of activities and group sessions planned. These range from the arts and creative exploration, to trips to a corn maze, a local industry, dance, a museum display, boot camp, yoga and even a ‘working with horses’ session. Kerr said it all has a team building thread.

Kerr credits his fellow teachers, support staff and student body for making the event a success. He adds Tisdale has embraced it in a big way.

“We have to find homes for [all] these kids to stay in and our community has come out in droves to support this exponentially. To put something like this together you need great people,” he said.

The conference wraps up Friday.
