Man sentenced for missing weekend jail

A man who showed up late for his weekend jail sentence won’t have to worry about his schedule any time soon.

Jeffery Litwin, of Prince Albert, was sentenced to 90 days in custody on July 11 but was given permission to serve his sentence on weekends. He showed up for the first weekend, Crown prosecutor Gail Douglas said, but failed to report on time the next week and was declared unlawfully at large. Douglas said Litwin managed to elude the authorities for nearly two months before a city police officer recognized him on the street and gave chase.

Douglas said Litwin, who was riding a bicycle, led multiple police vehicles on a low-speed chase and narrowly missed colliding with a police car before eventually giving up and surrendering.

“He didn’t go gently,” Douglas said. “It wasn’t a particularly easy arrest.”

The Crown was seeking six months in custody, Douglas said, on top of the remainder of Litwin’s previous 90-day sentence.

Defence lawyer Rebecca Crookshanks said Litwin acknowledged missing his scheduled intake appointment but was late by less than an hour. Crookshanks said the defence was pushing for “high fines” instead of additional jail time, as Litwin supports his common-law partner and seven children.

Given the opportunity to speak before his sentencing, Litwin explained he failed to report to jail on time simply because his watch broke. He has since replaced the defective timepiece, Litwin told the court, and asked Judge Earl Kalenith for leniency.

Kalenith did not impose the six months Douglas argued for, but instead sentenced Litwin to serve the remainder of the 90-day sentence in one stretch. Litwin was also sentenced to 15 days in jail for failing to report to the correctional centre on time and 30 days for failing to report to his probation officer.
