Good yield in charity harvest

Sep 19, 2017 | 12:00 PM

A great day, a great crop and a very important cause for Prince Albert.

The Redhead Equipment and Ronald McDonald Family room harvest went very well.

Sales Manager Arron McLean is confident the 145 acres of wheat they harvested Monday will raise a tidy sum for the Ronald McDonald Family Room at the Victoria hospital.

“We grew over 50 bushels an acre for sure and we’re just waiting to see the exact final numbers so we’re pretty happy with that,” McLean said. The numbers for total amount raised will be tallied later this month.

This was the fifth annual charity harvest by Redhead Equipment on the field located at the south end of town along Marquis Rd.

“The crop came off beautiful. The combines were running good and we had a great yield,” he said. “This whole project is about us having fun driving our machinery and finding a good cause.”

McLean says the project is made possible by the continuing efforts of many local companies, organizations and volunteers.

The wheat was taken by Fremont Trucking to the Viterra Whitestar elevator.

Redhead Equipment’s Field of the Future Initiative began in 2013 as a way to test various crops in the area, but its use has far exceeded those initial benefits. Over four years of the project, the field has raised over $178,000 for local organizations in the Prince Albert community.

The purpose of the Ronald McDonald Family Room is to provide a space (typically just steps away from their sick child) for families to escape the hospital setting and enjoy the comforts of home in a relaxing environment. The 1,300 square foot Family Room in Prince Albert is operated by staff and volunteers of RMHC-SK, open seven days a week and is the first of its kind in Saskatchewan.
