Pelican Narrows wildfire sparks renewal for wildlife

Sep 15, 2017 | 12:00 PM

As human residents return to Pelican Narrows, it’s expected the wildlife will start edging back too, but it’ll take time.

Darryl Crabbe, the executive director of the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation, said animals will have to leave the places where they sought refuge before relocating to their former area.

“Initially, there’s the wave of wildlife that has moved away from the fire,” Crabbe said. He added wildlife tend to find new areas to occupy, though only for about a year before returning to their home.

While the wildfire resulted in the loss of habitat, the fire itself is beneficial for the environment. Crabbe said it results in regrowth of new trees and plant life which in turn attracts new species.
