Saskatchewan First Nations receive dementia research grant

Sep 15, 2017 | 9:13 AM

The Alzheimer’s Society has granted a portion of a $ 3.4 million grant towards dementia research among First Nations in Saskatchewan.

The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations (FSIN) is working closely with experts to better understand dementia in the community and possibly help prevent it.

Jennifer Walker is a research chair in Indigenous health at Laurentian University. She said the FSIN has idenitified this as an emerging priority.

“This is the first use of health system data to look at First Nation health specifically and this grant will help focus on First Nations health and dementia,” she said.
