Four Raiders to attend NHL training camps

Sep 14, 2017 | 12:00 PM

The Prince Albert Raiders will have to wait a little longer to get a full roster back as four returning veteran players are attending NHL training camps.

After participating in rookie tournaments last weekend with their respective teams, Vojtech Budik (Buffalo Sabres), Parker Kelly (Ottawa Senators), Ian Scott (Toronto Maple Leafs), and Jordy Stallard (Winnipeg Jets) have been selected to participate in the main camp which will put them on the ice with NHL veterans. From there, it will be at each team’s discretion whether the players will stay to take part in exhibition games or return to the WHL.

“Everybody has that problem. Some teams have a few less, some teams have a few more, so every team deals with it,” Raiders Head Coach Marc Habscheid said. “It gives guys the opportunity that are here to get those quality minutes and play more, so it gives them a chance to show themselves. It is what it is in junior hockey. The only thing that’s consistent is change, and you just deal with it and roll with the punches.”

While the Raiders will have to deal with a roster shortage this weekend as they take on the Regina Pats in a home and home set of pre-season games, the situation is the same throughout the league as a total of 144 players representing every WHL club are taking part in NHL training camp. The Portland Winterhawks are facing the largest exodus, as 12 players are currently away from the junior team. The Pats, the host of the 2018 Mastercard Memorial Cup, will have a similar scenario with 10 players in NHL camps including last season’s WHL scoring champion Sam Steel, who is in camp with the Anaheim Ducks who drafted him in the first round in 2016.
