NDP leader meets caucus in P.A.

Sep 14, 2017 | 6:00 AM

NDP interim leader Nicole Sarauer is visiting Prince Albert and pushing the opposition’s message that the governing Saskatchewan Party are not transparent and have wasted taxpayer dollars.

She says recent cuts have hurt local programs.

“The mobile crisis [program] in Prince Albert for example having to cut their services because of government cuts,” she said. “We’re seeing municipalities like Prince Albert having to deal with cuts to grants-in-lieu and how that’s downloading on folks.”

Sarauer was speaking to paNOW before the party’s annual Northcote Gala in P.A. Wednesday night where she was guest speaker.

Nine of the twelve MLAs who make up the party’s caucus attended.

Asked if it was tough for the public to get their head around a leader when she is an ‘interim’ one, Sarauer said it was an exciting time for the party.

“We’re looking forward to that leadership race and having our permanent leader installed and putting forward a policy and platform that inspires and allows us to form government in 2020’” she said.

Sarauer said it would be up to the leadership candidates to propose policy after hearing from the public. However, advocating for more supports for survivors of domestic violence and assault were among her priorities.

Trent Wotherspoon and Ryan Meili are currently the two runners in the race for the top job with a membership vote set for May 2018.
