Wildfire situation remains stable going into Long Weekend

Sep 2, 2017 | 1:19 PM

Fire crews continue the battle to contain three wildfires burning around Pelican Narrows.

According to an update from the province late Saturday morning, the wildfire situation remains stable as crews head into the Long Weekend.

Over 2,300 residents have now been forced from their homes in the communities of Pelican Narrows, Birch Portage, Jan Lake and Sandy Bay. Over 1,300 evacuees are staying in Prince Albert.

Approximately 300 individuals remain in Pelican Narrows and there are no plans to evacuate these residents at this time.

Stability has similarly occurred in Sandy Bay, though around 200 health priority residents have been evacuated due to smoke concerns. A shipment of food and supplies arrived in the community Friday night.

No critical infrastructure or community buildings have been impacted by the fire.

The province says nearly all provincial firefighting resources are currently focused on the Pelican Narrows fires.

In-kind donations are not being accepted, according to the update, as the basic needs of the evacuees are being met until they are able to return home.

The Red Cross is urging those who have evacuated to register with the service to ensure everyone receives adequate support. Evacuees can register by calling 1-888-953-3463.
